Meet Arts In Motion
- Kamal Abdul-Alim
Trumpet, Jazz Ensemble 
Kamal comes to AIM after five years as a music teacher in the San Francisco public schools and 13 years as an instrumental music teacher in New York City. At Berklee School of Music he studied arranging and composition, and received a BA in African American Music from the University of Massachusetts. He received his Masters in Elementary Education from Long Island University and acquired special training in Music Therapy at Columbia Teachers College. A concert, club and festival performer throughout the world for 25 years, Kamal has performed with such talents as Clark Terry, Max Roach and Frank Foster. As a recording artist, Kamal has can be heard on eight foreign and domestic jazz labels and has recorded two CDs of his own. He has presented collegiate workshops and concerts, conducting an annual workshop at the International Jazz Seminar in Paris, France. Kamal also has studied, toured and performed in Africa.
- Jessica Evotia Andrews
Classical Piano & Theory 
Jessica graduated from Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle. Jessica's dedication and hard work since the age of four has taken her through many successful competitions and opportunities locally, throughout the U.S. and abroad. At age 13, Jessica won the Pacific Northwest School of Music Concerto Competition. She was the local gold medalist for the NAACP ACT- SO competition and national silver medalist. At age 17, she represented the U.S. at the Eighth Annual Pan Pacific Suzuki Conference in Adelaide, Australia. Jessica has also been featured in live local radio and television broadcasts, including a win in the “Make It Big” Talent Search Competition that led to her 2000 performance at the White House for President Bill Clinton. In 2001, she was Overall Winner of the Fifth Annual Stetson University Piano Weekend Competition in Deland, Florida. Since 2005, Jessica has been the pianist for “Trio Fluelliano” and continues to perform regularly as a soloist and chamber artist for Master Classes, concerts and competitions.
- Darryl Barber
Saxophone, Jazz Ensemble 
Darryl began his studies at the Brazil Academy of Music. Darryl later moved to San Francisco where he studied theory at San Francisco Conservatory of Music and saxophone with John Handy, Hadley Caliman and Joe Henderson while playing on the local music scene. Darryl continued his studies on a full scholarship at Berklee College of Music in Boston where he received the Richie Cole and Rudolph Johnson awards for outstanding musicianship. After leaving Berklee, Darryl moved to Copenhagen, Denmark. There he taught saxophone, jazz ensemble and ear training at the Alternative Rhythmic Conservatory while playing locally and throughout Europe. Composing the music for and acting in the film 80 Degrees East of Birdland brought Darryl to Oslo, Norway where he quickly became part of the music scene, teaching and composing for various short films and documentaries.
- Solvi A. Barber
Filmmaking 
Solvi is a director and scriptwriter of films with more than 20 years of experience. Educated in Norway and in the United States, she has made several award winning films, both in America and abroad. Solvi has taught storytelling and drama through filmmaking for kids in Norwegian grade schools and at Oslo's Royal Academy of Arts since 2003.
- Celine Ferland
Flute, Piccolo 
Celine earned her Masters in Flute Performance and Flute Pedagogy from Central Washington University and her BA in Flute Performance from Seattle Pacific University, Magna Cum Laude. She has performed with several of the area's finest music ensembles such as Orchestra Seattle, The Rainier Lyric Opera Company, and the Thalia Symphony Orchestra. Celine is the manager of “A Triem”, a classical music ensemble and a member of the Flute and Guitar Classical Duo. She has served as a faculty member at Central Washington University and at St. Michael's Music Academy where she gave music summer camps in flute choir and ensemble. With over fifteen years of experience in flute instruction, Celine has specialized in educating, coaching, and adjudicating young flutists throughout the Pacific Northwest.
- Pamela Gerke
Musical Theatre, Children's Choir, Cultural Arts, A Cappella Ensemble 
Pamela is an arts educator who has taught music, drama and integrated arts with children and adults for over twenty years. She has written numerous plays and musicals, founded and directed Kids Action Theater in Seattle and is the author of several books about children's drama and creative movement. As a choir conductor, Pam has directed Seattle Women's Ensemble, Seattle Peace Chorus, and Sacred Fire Choir (which she founded) and has written and published numerous choir compositions and arrangements. She currently conducts the Pine Cone Children's Choir at Evergreen Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Marysville and is currently in production development for a new musical play she is writing and composing.
- Benjamin Hunter
Violin 
Benjamin graduated from Whitman College with a BA in Music, focusing on Violin Studies. Fascinated with music from a young age, Benjamin started playing violin at the age of 6. Classically trained, he has participated in various ensemble groups, playing with the Phoenix Youth Orchestra and the Whitman College Symphony. Captivated by the sounds of the world, Benjamin tries to incorporate multiple styles of music into his repertoire and lesson plans. Benjamin performs regularly around the Seattle area, in jazz, rock and bluegrass styles.
- Austin James
Guitar, Jazz Theory, Songwriting 
Austin received his undergraduate degree in Songwriting and Performance from Berklee School of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. Educated in pop, blues, jazz and various world styles, as well as guitar performance, theory and studio production, he currently writes and performs his own music at various venues throughout Seattle. Austin has been providing guitar and music theory instruction for students of all ages and skill levels for over seven years in the greater Seattle area.
- Jan Jaffe
Vocal, Piano, Violin, Cello, Arts in the Schools Program 
Jan is a certificated teacher, earning both her Masters and Bachelors degrees in Music Education from Central Washington University. She started studying music formally in her fourth-grade school orchestra program and now has experience teaching strings, voice, piano, and general music to all ages. Most recently, Jan served as the Preparatory Strings Program Director and instructed a choir and numerous piano classes at CWU while earning her degree. Well noted for her passion to teach and perform various instruments in Classical as well as modern styles, Jan also maintains a never-ending appreciation and wonder of all the arts, enjoying such pastimes as dance, arts & crafts, and theater.
- Larry Jones
Drums, Percussion, Jazz Ensemble 
Larry received his Bachelors degree in Music from Rutgers University. Larry has toured the world several times over as a professional musician, performing on four continents with the popular R&B group, The Platters. A resident of Seattle since 1990, he is a current mainstay in leading clubs and festivals. Known for his spirited, propulsive drumming, Larry is also a talented composer, arranger and bandleader. As co-producer of the Earshot Living Spirit Concerts at Jazz Alley and leader of the Living Spirit Band, he is increasingly sought out for his thoughtful musical commentary and advocacy. Larry brings to Arts In Motion 15 years of teaching and curriculum development of drum and percussion for all levels.
- Daniel Miller
Guitar, Ukulele 
Daniel began studying music with the violin at age four, at the Pacific Northwest School of Music. After 10 years he switched to ukulele, followed by guitar, performing in his own rock, reggae, and funk bands. He has studied jazz, Brazilian, and Caribbean styles at Berklee School of Music in Boston, and earned a BA in contemporary writing and production. Daniel has been teaching guitar lessons to students in Seattle and Boston for 5 years. In 2000, Daniel formed Nuffsed, a rock-reggae band, which performed at many venues and festivals in Seattle and toured along West Coast. He has also played with the Senegalese group, Ibrahima Camara and Safal, and studied Highlife guitar in Ghana, West Africa.
- Michael Misiurak
Piano 
Michael is a performing pianist, accompanist, and instructor with over 12 years of teaching experience. Michael earned a Masters in piano performance at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and his BA in piano at California State University Northridge. He served throughout his career as an accompanist for church settings, including the landmark Old St. Mary's Cathedral, as well as for Opera a la Carte, the Gilbert and Sullivan Touring Company. He enjoys chamber group and recital competitions, performing solo recitals, and collaborating in concert with vocalists and other instrumentalists. In addition to serving his students, Michael currently works as accompanist for Tacoma Opera and at St. Anne's Parish on Queen Anne Hill.
- Viktoriya Otto
Piano 
Viktoriya received her Bachelors degree in piano teaching and a Masters in piano teaching, chamber ensemble solo and accompaniment from Donetsk Musical College in the Ukraine. She started teaching piano performance at Donetsk Children's Music School #6 upon completion of her studies and was named head of the piano department. She also worked as an accompanist for violinists, chamber ensembles, vocalists, and other solo musicians. After coming to the United States, she accepted a teaching position at Music Discovery School and had taught there for almost five years before the school became Arts In Motion. Currently Viktoriya is a church musician at Shoreline Unitarian Universalist Church and teaches piano at her studio in Shoreline. Viktoriya is a member of the Seattle Music Teachers Association and has been teaching piano for 38 years.
- Natalie Ramsey
Visual Art 
Natalie majored in painting at the University of Washington and transferred to Parson's school of Design in New York where she studied painting, sculpture, ceramics and photography. Upon returning to Seattle she entered a teacher certification program and later completed her studies with a Masters in Education from Antioch University. Natalie's teaching career includes 15 years of teaching art and interdisciplinary curriculum in public and private schools, museums, enrichment programs, to prospective teachers in certification programs and as professional development for educators. At her studio in the Central District, Natalie paints architectural portraits of the urban environment and writes and illustrates children's books.
- Begin Scarseth
Violin, Classical Ensemble 
Begin has been an active musician in the Northwest for many years. In her early years she participated in the Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestra, summer music festivals including the Master Works Festival in New York and Marrowstone Music Festival in Port Townsend and Bellingham, WA. She received her Bachelors of Musical Arts degree in 2004 from Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, with a focus on researching the early music of Heinrich Biber. Ms. Scarseth has played with many groups in the Northwest and is currently a member of the Tacoma Symphony Orchestra and a string quartet she founded called Serendipity Strings. For the last four years, she has maintained teaching studios in Issaquah and Lynnwood.
- Kristin Schneider
Clarinet 
Kristin earned her Bachelor of Arts in Music at Seattle Pacific University, where she studied under Mary Kantor. Through her college career and in the years following, she has been involved with teaching all ages in a range of environments, from early music classes for infants and parents, to private clarinet lessons and one-on-one music lessons for students with special needs. She regularly performs with community orchestras and chamber groups throughout the Seattle area, and recently played two concert tours with singer Michael W. Smith around the Pacific Northwest. Kristin is excited to work at Arts In Motion, sharing her love of music with her students.
- Sheree Seretse
Marimba, Marimba Ensemble 
Known for her kind and patient teaching style, Sheree has been studying, teaching and performing music and dance of Zimbabwe for nearly 40 years. Since 1983, Sheree has been instrumental in developing and augmenting several African drum and dance ensembles in the Northwest. She has taught in many settings, including 31 years at the Langston Hughes Performing Arts Center, Spruce Street School, the Giddens School, U-Coop School, Seattle Public Schools, and at festivals and colleges around the country. Sheree loves African music and hopes to share the joy she finds in it with the world.
- Amanda Soto
Flute, Arts in the Schools Program 
Amanda received her Bachelor of Music from the University of North Texas. During her years at North Texas she played and performed around the Denton/Dallas area, teaching private lessons and group instrumental music to children and seniors. She is certified to teach music K-12 and was assistant band director at Berta Cabaza Middle School, Texas. Her musical studies include classical music at the University of Keele, England and a summer in Ghana to study the musical culture of the Ewe people. She has completed a Masters in Ethnomusicology at the University of Washington and is finishing up her Doctorate in Music Education, where she is currently involved in a university community partnership in the Yakima Valley.
- Kent Stevenson
Choir, Piano 
Kent is a music educator and composer who has worked with choirs and other musicians in the Pacific Northwest for more than 25 years. Kent founded several choirs and has been choral director for numerous Seattle area churches. His extensive background includes theatre, gospel, jazz, children's choirs, composition, concert production and performance. A composer of and collaborator on original works with the Seattle Peace Chorus, City Cantabile Choir, Urban Rhythms Choir, and the Giddens School where he conducts the weekly “Morning Sing!”, Kent is presently the director of the Mount Zion Brotherhood Chorus, director of the Shades of Praise Choir and the Jubilation Choir of St Therese Catholic Church, and the St Therese School Choir. Kent and his choirs have performed in Germany, Austria the Czech Republic, Russia, China, The Bahamas, Brazil and France.
- Felicia (SundA) Strange
Musikgarten 
Felicia comes to Arts In Motion with a desire to share her love for the arts and to inspire the children she works with to become more expressive in the arts. This passion was cultivated by her musical family providing exposure and opportunities in the opera, symphony and ballet. One such opportunity, through the Seattle Public Schools, resulted in an eight-year scholarship to attend Cornish College of the Arts Preparatory Dance Program. This experience led her to continue her study of dance in early adulthood at the Alvin Ailey Dance Center in New York before returning to finish her BA in Communication with a concentration in drama at Northwest College. Felicia strives to cultivate in children the ability to be expressive and creative.
- Abby Northcott
Dance 
Abby graduates this spring with her B.F.A. in Dance from Cornish College of the Arts. A dedicated and passionate teacher, Abby has gained valuable experience in choreography, teaching, and movement analysis to provide her students a shared language of dance and dance concepts. Abby finds great joy in teaching dance and movement classes to children, and has traveled with The Good Foot to teach underpriviledged children in the Philippines and Laos. Abby loves the process of working with children and youth, but also performing. She has extensive ballet training with both Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet and Pacific Northwest Ballet, many times performing with PNB as a Professional Division student there.
- Owuor Arunga
Trumpet 
Owuor Arunga is a native of Kisumu Kenya. As a graduate of the New School University, he was awarded the opportunity to play with the beacons of jazz. Acknowledged for his talent and his ability to absorb the knowledge of his elders, Owuor was branded with the title, "Young Lion". Upon his return to Seattle, Owuor has become an artist eager to spread the vibrations of beauty he has come to be in tune with and has assembled a local group of equally talented young artists. From his origin as a member of the acclaimed Garfield High School Jazz Band, Owuor has since played around the United States and toured countries around the world including Canada, Europe and South Africa.
