Owuor Arunga

Owuor Arunga

Owuor Arunga is a native of Kisumu Kenya. As a graduate of the New School University, he was awarded the opportunity to play with the beacons of jazz. Acknowledged for his talent and his ability to absorb the knowledge of his elders, Owuor was branded with the title, "Young Lion". Upon his return to Seattle, Owuor has become an artist eager to spread the vibrations of beauty he has come to be in tune with and has assembled a local group of equally talented young artists. From his origin as a member of the acclaimed Garfield High School Jazz Band, Owuor has since played around the United States and toured countries around the world including Canada, Europe and South Africa.

Darryl Barber

Darryl Barber

Darryl began his studies at the Brazil Academy of Music. Darryl later moved to San Francisco where he studied theory at San Francisco Conservatory of Music and saxophone with John Handy, Hadley Caliman and Joe Henderson while playing on the local music scene. Darryl continued his studies on a full scholarship at Berklee College of Music in Boston where he received the Richie Cole and Rudolph Johnson awards for outstanding musicianship. After leaving Berklee, Darryl moved to Copenhagen, Denmark. There he taught saxophone, jazz ensemble and ear training at the Alternative Rhythmic Conservatory while playing locally and throughout Europe. Composing the music for and acting in the film 80 Degrees East of Birdland brought Darryl to Oslo, Norway where he quickly became part of the music scene, teaching and composing for various short films and documentaries.

Solvi A. Barber

Solvi A. Barber

Solvi is a director and scriptwriter of films with more than 20 years of experience. Educated in Norway and in the United States, she has made several award winning films, both in America and abroad. Solvi has taught storytelling and drama through filmmaking for kids in Norwegian grade schools and at Oslo's Royal Academy of Arts since 2003.

Darna Bedwell

Darna Bedwell

Darna performs recitals of her original piano works and has written numerous ensembles for other instruments including voice, violin and a full symphony. Darna enjoys teaching piano and taught for 10 years at her own Octaves Piano Studio. These days she enjoys other talents: painting watercolor and writing inspirational Christian articles (which you can view at faithwriters.com). She also is an author of numerous books including Rudiments for Practicing Piano.

Billy Buchanan

Billy Buchanan

Billy is a native of Providence, RI. While completing his B.M. in Jazz Composition at the Berklee College of Music, he began teaching private lessons, leading master classes, and teaching small ensembles. After graduation Billy moved to Wiesbaden, Germany, where he was stationed with the 1st Armored Division Band (US Army). While serving in the Army, Billy completed his M.A.Ed in Teaching and Instruction and began working on a PhD in Educational Leadership. After his tour, Billy was selected as an Urban Education Fellow and attended the Urban Education Policy program at Brown University. Currently, he is preparing the defense of his dissertation, which examined the impact of poverty on academic achievement in music.

Dever Dunnett

Dever Dunnett

Dever Dunnett earned her BFA from Colorado State University with a focus on graphic design, and her Masters in Teaching at City University. She has experience educating children from kindergarteners through high school. Originally from Wyoming, Dever has been strongly influenced by her family, mainly educators and artists. Her passion for painting-watercolor, acrylic, gauche and oils, with strong emphasis on great design and creativity will help students explore their own natural talents. While visual art is her passion, she also has a deep appreciation of music having played piano, trumpet and singing in choirs over the years. When at home with her family and three cats, she enjoys cooking, gardening, reading, knitting, crossword puzzles and mysteries.

Olisa Enrico-Johnson

Olisa Enrico-Johnson

Olisa Enrico-Johnson received her Bachelors of Fine Arts, Magna Cum Laude, from Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). She stayed at VCU to experience the Graduate Theatre Pedagogy program and earned a Masters of Fine Arts in May 2010. Born into a life of music, OLisa began singing in public at the age of three, rocking the mic throughout the Northwest as an eMCee at age 13. She believes that artists and the arts are vital to the health of everyone, and shares that belief in her performance and teaching. OLisa works with students of all ages, instilling in them principles of community and shared responsibility. She currently runs a creative services company and sits on the board of The Conciliation Project 501c3.

John Groves

John Groves

John Groves earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in music from Central Washington University with focused study in the areas of trombone performance and music education. Mr. Groves leads his own jazz combo and performs freelance work throughout the region. His performance experiences include orchestra, big band, dixieland, jazz, rock, funk, marching band, trombone choir and small ensembles. John's students have earned positions in All-State/All-Northwest honor groups and scholarships locally and nationally at college/university/conservatory music programs. Groves is also an accomplished musician on the Australian Aboriginal musical instrument known as the didgeridoo. John has studied crafting and performance techniques with notable didgeridoo masters in Australia. His didgeridoo performance and presentations have been featured in local schools, special events, on live radio in Europe and at the National Music Museum. John is excited to offer up his diverse musical experience at Arts in Motion.

Larry Jones

Larry Jones

Larry received his Bachelors degree in Music from Rutgers University. Larry has toured the world several times over as a professional musician, performing on four continents with the popular R&B group, The Platters. A resident of Seattle since 1990, he is a current mainstay in leading clubs and festivals. Known for his spirited, propulsive drumming, Larry is also a talented composer, arranger and bandleader. As co-producer of the Earshot Living Spirit Concerts at Jazz Alley and leader of the Living Spirit Band, he is increasingly sought out for his thoughtful musical commentary and advocacy. Larry brings to Arts In Motion 15 years of teaching and curriculum development of drum and percussion for all levels.

Chris Morda

Chris Morda

Chris has been playing guitar for 28 years and has a wide musical background. Chris came to the guitar as a teenager and took 6 years of private lessons. Chris's love of the blues and pop culture led him to seek out the University of Washington's Ethnomusicology program where he received his B.A in 1998. Chris has been teaching private and group over the last 14 years and recently completed a two-year certificate program in Music Therapy from the New School in New York City. Chris plays a wide range of guitars including standard acoustic and electric, fretless, lap steel, and "microtonal guitars" with added frets not found on standard guitars. Chris has most recently performed with the Harmonic Guitar Quartet and the Stone Crazy Blues Band.

Kate Olson

Kate Olson

Kate Olson earned her MM degree in Improvisation from the University of Michigan and a BA in Music (Jazz Emphasis) from the University of Wyoming. As a multi-instrumentalist specializing in jazz and free improvisation, Kate’s performance experience is exceptionally diverse; from cruise ship shows to performing original jazz in Slovakia at a folk music festival. She has also played in over 20 musical theater pit orchestras, including companies at the University of Michigan and the College Light Opera Company in Falmouth, MA. Currently, Kate enjoys playing with the Seattle Women's Jazz Orchestra and teaching private students. Her first record, Improvised Duets with guitarist Gary Prince, debuted in the fall of 2009.

Viktoriya Otto

Viktoriya Otto

Viktoriya received her Bachelors degree in piano teaching and a Masters in piano teaching, chamber ensemble solo and accompaniment from Donetsk Musical College in the Ukraine. She started teaching piano performance at Donetsk Children's Music School #6 upon completion of her studies and was named head of the piano department. She also worked as an accompanist for violinists, chamber ensembles, vocalists, and other solo musicians. After coming to the United States, she accepted a teaching position at Music Discovery School and had taught there for almost five years before the school became Arts In Motion. Currently Viktoriya is a church musician at Shoreline Unitarian Universalist Church and teaches piano at her studio in Shoreline. Viktoriya is a member of the Seattle Music Teachers Association and has been teaching piano for 38 years.

Claudia Tomsa Pendeleton

Claudia Tomsa Pendeleton

Claudia Tomsa Pendeleton originally from Romania, studied at Transylvania University. Coming to the US, Claudia later received her Bachelor of Music degree from Ithaca College, and her Masters in Performance at the University of Southern Maine. Performing solo or with vocalists and instrumentalists Claudia has played many stages in the US and Romania. Her work earned her an assistantship in accompanying and vocal coaching at the University of Southern Maine as well as a collaborative artist position at the Aspen Music Festival in 2005. For over ten years Claudia has taught piano to students of all ages and levels. Her goal is to nurture the love for music in each student, with the piano as an enjoyable means of experiencing it.

Sheree Seretse

Sheree Seretse

Known for her kind and patient teaching style, Sheree has been studying, teaching and performing music and dance of Zimbabwe for nearly 40 years. Since 1983, Sheree has been instrumental in developing and augmenting several African drum and dance ensembles in the Northwest. She has taught in many settings, including 31 years at the Langston Hughes Performing Arts Center, Spruce Street School, the Giddens School, U-Coop School, Seattle Public Schools, and at festivals and colleges around the country. Sheree loves African music and hopes to share the joy she finds in it with the world.
